Wines and Vintners
Jamek Wine Estate
The foundation stone of the wine estate was laid by Anton Jamek in 1910 when he purchased the first vineyards and barrels.
His son, Josef Jamek, dedicated himself body and soul to wine growing, attended the viniculture school in Krems and extended the barrel cellar. Acquisition of the Klaus vineyard in 1959 was a landmark decision. In 1960 he filled the first Riesling in a natural state, which means without sugar, from a single variety and a single vineyard – for those days a brave decision.
Thus Josef Jamek first showed the way for natural, quality orientated wine in the Wachau, which later attained importance for the whole of Austria. Josef Jamek is rightly considered the doyen of the Wachau today.
Since 1996 his son-in-law and daughter, Hans and Jutta Altmann, have run the business, which today comprises 25 hectares.
Josef Jamek’s quality credo today is to remain loyal to the business. Already in summer the quality of the grapes are cultivated in a natural way with a great deal of manual work on the vines.
Harvesting takes place 100% selectively by hand. The viniculture is undertaken according to the old Wachau tradition with full fementation thoughout of the musts with the grapes own yeast to the natural conclusion of fermentation. The musts ferment in stainless-steel containers, after which the wines age in large wooden barrels and are marked by the respective soil, their natural aroma and variety. Delicious wine and fine food has a tradition of many years in the house of Jamek. Riesling from the Klaus vineyard is already legendary. The traditional and the modern are united here under one roof. The latest technology is a prerequisite for careful winemaking – traditional aging in wooden barrels ensures the charm of the wines.
