Wines and Vintners

Kloster am Spitz Wine Estate

Our aim is to bring wine grapes into bottles so that the fruit, body and expression achieve perfect harmony, and that our personal signature is recognisable.

The vineyard is the foundation stone for high quality.

What the vine cannot take in from the surroundings, the sun, the air and the soil in the course of the year will be lacking in the wine that is bottled.
To create the best possible conditions for the vines is a matter of great importance to us, Reinhold and Thomas Schwarz. But we do not wish to pamper the vines too much, because if they wallow in excess they become susceptible and rotten.
We harvest up to 75% red-wine grapes and 25% white-wine grapes on a vineyard area of 14 hectares on the south-east slopes of the Leitha Range, which gently falls to Lake Neusiedl.

The ground is marked by soil over bedrock in the higher locations with alluvial clay soil and poor mussel chalk on the flat slopes. This results in the clear, marked fruit of our wines, mineral and spicy nuances, great development potential and an unmistakeable character.

Decisive selection takes place already in the vineyard. We place our faith in time and peace in the cellar.
In the fermentation phase, around 60 individual charges are made from which, as soon as the grape juice has shown its true quality, we unite the wine in three to four levels of quality.

The most important red wines are known as Antonius, Nepomuk (cuvées, named after the patron saints of the form monastery at Spitz) and Pinot noir Reserve. As a typical “Austrian”, in exceptional years we produce a Blaufränkisch Reserve, which is then sold only after three to four years.
The exotic counterpart is the "Syrano", a 100%r Syrah that already feel very much at home with us. The Spitzmühle is the foundation stone of the white-wine line. It is a fruity light summer wine, which unites five varieties. The Sauvignon blanc has been a standard wine for more than 20 years in our cellar. The Chardonnay Muschelkalk, annually our best white wine, leaves the cellar only two years after being harvested. Such specialities as sekt from our own basic wine, “Prädikatsweine“ and the "Vintage" liqueur wine, a Blaufränkisch made according to the port method, rounds off the range.
