Wines and Vintners
Markowitsch Wine Estate
One can philosophise about wine at length. Or simply drink and take pleasure in it. We are decisively for the latter. Thus so little here.
On the one hand we endeavour to find the balance between naturalness and tradition with our wines, as well as internationality and modernity on the other. Motto: even if you travel far in the world, never lose touch with the soil or relinquish sound judgement.
This means for our wine: quality at an international level, but simultaneously preserving regional identity. For which reason in every red-wine cuvée we have at least 50% Zweigelt, the leading variety in our Carnuntum wine-growing region. One does not need to “understand” a wine – the most important thing is to enjoy it. There remains only one thing left to do: get hold of a corkscrew!
Yes, we are fussy in this respect.
It may be a truism, but not a truism without reason: the quality of the wine grows in the vineyard.
But not on its own, we are obliged to really take the matter in hand in caring intensively for the vines throughout the year, controlling carefully and constantly, undertaking conscientious foliage treatment, which is not something for the hectic. One requires almost meditative equanimity.
When harvesting this means tough reduction of quantity of the grapes to achieve a maximum of quality.
Perfect cultivation in the vineyard takes place at the wine estate with the fussy manual separation of unripe grapes on the conveyor belt.
We set out vines during replanting that are carefully selected and adapted to an optimum to our soil and climate, and grow slowly and uniformly. 5,000 to 6,000 vines are planted in one hectare, where earlier only half as many was the case. A little stress is good for the vines and they drive their roots deeper into the soil to provide smaller grapes with a thicker skin. We prefer them most because the colour and all of the marvellous aromas are in the skin.
